Dr B's BARF

Feed their true nature

The B.A.R.F (Biologically Appropriate RAW Food) diet or BARF feeding program is about feeding dogs and cats the diet they evolved to eat over millions of years of genetic adaptation. In 1993, Dr Ian Billinghurs Veterinary Surgeon B.V.Sc.(Hons) introduced & pioneered Principles of Evolutionary Nutrition through his first book “Give Your Dog A Bone”, making him the founding father of the BARF diet here in Australia & globally.

At Dr B’s BARF we follow Dr B’s feeding principal in a convenient and complete and balanced single serve meal for your beloved dog or cat. Each recipe contains fresh, natural, top quality protein, vegetables and superfoods - all snap frozen to seal in the nutrition.

DR B’s BARF is more than just a RAW diet, it’s a diet optimised toward optimising your pet's genetic potential.

Meet our Founder Dr. Ian Billinghurst Veterinary Surgeon B.V.Sc.(Hons), B.Sc.Agr., Dip. Ed.

Nutritionist, Acupuncturist, Agricultural Scientist, Author, Lecturer, Nutritional consultant and RAW Pet Food Producer.

Dr. Ian Billinghurst (affectionately known as ‘Dr. B.’) graduated with a BScAgr. in 1966 from Sydney University as an Agronomist and Nutritionist. He worked as a research Scientist at Orange Agricultural Research Station in NSW briefly, then spent four years teaching secondary level Science and Agriculture. During this time, Dr. Billinghurst obtained his Diploma in Education from The University of New England, Armidale.

His first book, “Give Your Dog a Bone” was published in late 1993, and is one of the most influential books on canine nutrition ever written, discussing why raw food is the ideal diet for dogs. In 1997 and 1998, Dr. Billinghurst toured the UK, then the US. His seminars here spawned the enormous raw food movement that now flourishes across North America and arond the world.

He created, then marketed his own brand of Pet Food – Doctor B’s BARF, for over ten years. He now consults, writes and lectures on evolutionary nutrition and conducts clinical and literature research into nutrition.

You can learn more about Dr. Billinghurst, contact him directly for speaking engagements or purchase his books through his website.

A biologically appropriate diet for a dog or cat is one that consists of raw whole foods like those eaten by their wild ancestors. The food should contain the same balance and type of ingredients as consumed by those wild ancestors and in the same form: raw. This food will include such things as muscle meat, bone, fat, organ meat, vegetable and fruit materials and any other "foods" that will mimic what those wild ancestors ate.

Mimic, not duplicate – this is an important distinction. We are not trying to return pets to nature. It is not practical to feed any domestic animal its truly natural diet, nor would we want to allow our pets to live under truly ‘natural’ (and potentially dangerous!) conditions… and no access to veterinary care when needed. What we do want for pets is a diet and an environment that maximizes their health and wellbeing.
